Frequently Asked Questions
What is yoga?
Yoga means ‘union' more specifically union of the body and mind with the spirit. Physical yoga practice can help you to become stronger, more flexible and generally healthier. The aim is to calm the mind, open the heart and stimulate your spiritual evolution. There are many forms of yoga and many kinds of practice. Our classes are generally based on Hatha or physical yoga poses. Information taught in our classes will offer a good foundation in yoga, however, because of the many types of yoga being taught today in the United States, feel free to explore all classes that interest you. Diversity and knowledge are powerful friends.
Is yoga compatible with my religion?
While yoga has roots in religions and cultures that may differ from yours, there is no religion in yoga. The yoga practices of self-awareness, self-training, and self-discovery are non-sectarian, and are compatible with all religions. It is easy to keep yoga and religion separate, or if you prefer, to integrate them. The choice rests with each person as an individual. In the interest of wisdom and tolerance, our yoga classes are open to all, regardless of spirituality.
Am I too… (Inflexible, injured, old, out of shape, etc.) to do yoga?
Absolutely not! Yoga is for everyone. With proper safety modifications, anyone can enjoy the benefits of yoga practice.
What should I bring to class?
Please bring a mat and a towel or blanket. I will have some mats and props to borrow or buy, but if you have your own we encourage you to bring them. We practice in bare feet, although some people prefer to wear socks during meditation. Please bring a reusable water bottle and with any new adventure… bring an open mind!
Is pre-registration required?
Pre-registration is NOT required, students can ‘drop-in’ any class. Please plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill out a a health/release form.
General yoga guidelines:
Yoga is not a race or a competition; it is about honoring your body. Students must progress at their own rate and learn to stop when needed.
Yoga is practiced in bare feet, usually on a mat, sometimes in a chair.
Wear comfortable clothes, keep in mind that during some inversions, loose shirts may succumb to gravity. Many choose to wear a fitted top. You may want to dress in layers should you get hot or cold. Avoid wearing accessories or jewelry that could impede movement. Please avoid wearing perfume, as some are sensitive to smells.
Please arrive early to class with cell phones off, place your mat and sit quietly in preparation for class.
An empty stomach is recommended, wait 2 or more hours after a meal or ½ hour after a light snack. If you have a blood sugar problem, by all means, eat!
Always inform your instructor about changes in health conditions, medications or anything that may affect your yoga practice.
